The regular season of NBA starts from last week of October. Prior to the regular season, a training camp is held from late September that ends with preseason exhibition games. The 30 teams that make up the NBA play 82 games with each other during the regular season. 41 games are played at homes of the franchised teams and 41 are played at various other places. NBA essentially comprises of two conferences – the Eastern conference and the Western conference each consisting of three divisions. The Atlantic, the Central and the Southeast divisions make up the Eastern conference and the Northwest, Pacific and the Southwest divisions make up the Western conference.
Each division has 5 teams in it and one team play against the other 4 teams at least 4 times in a year that is each team plays 16 games against the teams in its own division. Then again each team plays 4 times against six teams from the other 2 divisions of its own conference totaling to 24 games. The balance 4 teams play 3 times totaling to 12 games. And finally each team has to play 2 games with the teams of the other conference totaling to 30 games
The Stanley Cup is played by 16 National Hockey League teams that playoff for spots. Although the teams that normally win the Stanley Cup are the teams with the best winning percentages. However, that does not mean that a team with a low winning percentage cannot win the Stanley Cup. It has been done twice throughout history.
Winning the Stanley Cup is the most honored award among NHL teams. The Stanley Cup dates back to 1892. During this time the Governor General of Canada proclaimed that there should be a challenge cup held each year among champion teams. The Governor General, Lord Stanley then created what is today known as the Stanley Cup.
Lord Stanley purchased a cup and assigned two trustees to the cup. Each year when a hockey team won the cup they would be presented with the cup to latter return it to the trustees to have it awarded to the next team. Each team that won the Stanley Cup would then have their name and year engraved on the silver ring fitted on the cup.
Today, the Stanley Cup is not only one of the highest awards that a hockey team could receive it is a reward that is sought throughout the league.
Field goal is an excellent way of scoring 3 points in a professional match of American Football NFL. According to the rules of NFL, if an offense team does not get any success scoring through touchdowns they can try to kick field goals. Each field goal is worth 3 points and oftentimes it happens to be the deciding factor in the last few seconds of the NFL match. A field goal can be kicked from anywhere across the field. But most NFL teams find it easy to kick in the field goal from the 45-yard line of the defense team which is also the 4th down. The field goals are generally kicked by the placekicker also called ad the field goal kicker and to get it right he has to do it upright over the crossbar. The defense also gets a fair chance to block the kick and prevent the field goal from happening.
Another way of scoring points in a NFL match is through the safety that provides two points. When a ball carrier from the offensive team is tackled behind the goal line of own team it is considered a safety and the defense team is awarded two points.
To recognize the talent of its players NBA gives away trophies, individual awards and Honors to its outstanding professional players and coaches. There are a total of 12 awards given away annually. The championship trophy of NBA is titled Larry O‘Brien Trophy and was first awarded in 1978. The team winning the NBA finals receives this prestigious trophy. Earlier to 1978 when NBA was working as the Basketball Association of America the same trophy was being given away under the title of Walter A. Brown Trophy which was first awarded in 1947.
The individual awards given away by NBA include the All-star Game Most Valuable Player, The Rookie of the year (both introduced from 1953), Most Valuable Player or MVP (introduced in 1956) and The Bill Russell Finals Most Valuable Player (introduced in 1969). The other trophies include Coach of the Year, Sportsmanship Award, Executive of the Year, J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, Sixth Man of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and the Most Improved Player. It is not just the teams, the players and the coaches that get awarded even the front office staff get awarded for their hard work in organizing the highly professional basketball matches.
Passing the ball in NFL matches is very important and even more important is to complete the pass. The pass is completed when the ball is caught by wide receiver or the right end. If however the ball touches the ground first before the players from the offense team is able to catch it, the pass is considered incomplete.
As for the defense team playing in the NFL match they can prevent the opponents from advancing the ball and gaining yardage by bringing the player carrying the ball to the ground. This technique is called as tackling and when the knee of the player carrying the ball touches the ground he is tackled. In such circumstances the play is over. Another way of ending the play is when a player runs off bounds. Like in any other sport, the main object of the NFL matches is to score the highest points. There are 4 ways of scoring points. One is touchdown which gives six points, the extra point and 2-point conversion gives one to two points, field goal gives 3 points and safety gives 2 points. The teams have to score as many points as possible to remain in the lead.
