April 25, 1994:
The Arena Football League approves Des Moines, Iowa for an expansion team in 1995.
February 6, 1995:
The Barnstormers announce the hiring of John Gregory as the teamıs first Head Coach and Director of Football Operations.
May 12, 1995:
The Barnstormers play their first regular season game, on the road against the Milwaukee Mustangs. In a wild finish that sees both teams combine to score 24 points in the final 40.4 seconds of the fourth quarter, the Barnstormers win, 69-61.
May 20, 1995:
The Barnstormers play their first regular season home game against the Miami Hooters at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. They win, 41-29.
August 13, 1995:
The Barnstormers win their first playoff game by defeating the Arizona Rattlers 56-52.
August 26, 1996:
In ArenaBowl X before a sold-out crowd in Iowa, Tampa Bay defeats the Barnstormers, 42-38. An AFL-record audience of over one million watches on ESPN.
August 25, 1997:
The Barnstormers lose ArenaBowl XI, 55-33, in Arizona.
January 8, 1998:
Kurt Warner signs a contract with the St. Louis Rams after an illustrious three-year career with the Barnstormers.
June 1, 1998:
With the loss of Kurt Warner to the NFL and after an 0-5 start, the Barnstormers trade WR/LB Chris Spencer and OL/DL John Dixon to the New Jersey Red Dogs for quarterback Aaron Garcia, who goes on to break most of Warnerıs passing records.
November 1, 2000:
The NHL's New York Islanders ownership group of Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar, as well as business associate Russell Artzt, are approved by the AFLıs Board of Directors for the sale and relocation of the Iowa Barnstormers from Des Moines, Iowa to Long Island, New York.
January 26, 2001:
The Dragons acquire lineman Sean Tremblay of Port Jefferson Station from Indiana via trade. Tremblay becomes the first Long Island-born player in team history.
April 2, 2001:
Newsday reporter Gregg Sarra suits up and takes part in five plays during the Dragonsı first exhibition game at Nassau Coliseum. He survives.
April 12, 2001:
The New York Dragons take to the field at Nassau Coliseum for their first game since relocating from Des Moines.
April 27, 2001:
The team won its first game since moving to New York with a
70-58 victory over the Buffalo Destroyers.
June 30, 2001:
Aaron Garcia makes AFL history becoming the 3rd QB to surpass 20,000 yards passing for his career. Garcia breaks the mark on a 21-yard TD pass to Kevin Swayne at New Jersey.
July 7, 2001:
The Dragons defeat Carolina by the score 99-68, shattering the AFL record for points by one and both teams.
July 14, 2001:
Aaron Garcia breaks his own AFL record for TDıs in a season in the Dragonsı 62-55 win at Arizona. Garcia would finish the season with 104 TD passes. Also on this day, kicker Clay Rush hits 8-8 PATıs, surpassing the record for PATıs in a season. Rush finished with 110 PATıs made on the year.
July 21, 2001:
Garcia sets a new AFL record for passing yards in a season, throwing for 377 yards in a 73-56 rout at Florida as the Dragonıs clinched a berth in the 2001 AFL playoffs. The 377-yard performance gives Garcia the AFL record with 4,515 yards passing on the season. Garcia tossed nine TDıs in the game.
January 31, 2002:
Aaron Garcia becomes the first Dragon to sign with an NFL team when the record-breaking quarterback signs with the San Francisco 49ers. He is later rejoins the Dragons during the 2002 season.
March 5, 2002:
The AFL and NBC Sports announce an exclusive agreement to become revenue sharing partners in a historic national television contract beginning with the 2003 season. The league also announces a shift in its season schedule, from April-August to February-June beginning in 2003.
February 24, 2003:
Aaron Garcia becomes the first Dragon to sign with an NFL team when the record-breaking quarterback signs with the San Francisco 49ers. He is later rejoins the Dragons during the 2002 season.
January 31, 2002:
The Dragons announced the firing of John Gregory, the only head coach in franchise history. He left the team with a regular season record of 66-48 and a playoff record of 6-6.
February 25, 2003:
The Dragons hire former Super Bowl winner Todd Shell as Head Coach. Shell took the 0-4 Dragons to a 8-8 record and thier first of three consecutive Eastern Division Championships.
May 16, 2003:
With a 63-47 victory in Carolina over the Cobras, the Dragons win their first ever Eastern Division Championship. QB Aaron Garcia would lead the way with 365 passing yards and eight touchdowns.
May 25, 2003:
An Ian Howfield 30-yard field-goal with three seconds left gives the Dragons their first ever playoff win in New York. A 17-0 fourth quarter run by the Dragons led the Dragons to a 48-45 victory at the Coliseum.
June 1, 2003:
The Dragons ArenaBowl hopes were ended with a 69-62 loss at the Orlando Predators. Aaron Garcia would lead the team back from a 24-point deficit to fall short on the gameıs last play. Prior to the game, Head Coach Todd Shell was named Coach of the Year.
April 7, 2004:
OS Kevin Swayne rejoins the team after a three-year career with the New York Jets.
June 30, 2004:
The Dragons and OS Kevin Swayne agree to a two-year contract, keeping the talented receiver with the team through th 2006 season.
August 4, 2004:
Todd Shell resigns as the head coach. He finished his Dragonsı tenure with a 17-11 record.
August 16, 2004:
After an extensive search, the Dragons announced the hiring of Weylan Harding as the teamıs third head coach in franchise history.
November 4, 2004:
Aaron Garcia agrees to a new three-year contract with the Dragons.
November 11, 2004:
After selecting him in a dispersal draft a month earlier, the Dragons re-signed former Barnstormer OS Mike Horacek for the 2005 season.
December 16, 2004:
With the NBC TV deal already extended for two more seasons, the AFL signs a two-year agreement with Fox Sports Net and Comcast to broadcast regional games. Nearly 90 percent of all AFL games will be broadcasted on TV in 2005.
February 27, 2005:
The Dragons defense tied an AFL record by recording in six interceptions versus the Arizona Rattlers at the Coliseum. Corey Johnson led the team with two INTs. The game also marked the first meeting against former head coach Todd Shell.
April 29, 2005:
Aaron Garcia becomes the first professional quarterback to throw for 700 career touchdowns when he completed a 37-yard pass to Kevin Swayne at Dallas.
May 7, 2005:
The Dragons special teams unit set a new record for combined kickoff returns for touchdowns when Chris Anthony returned an onsides kick for a score. The Dragons finished the season setting the new standard with twelve. Will Holder led the team in 2005 with five return touchdowns.
May 15, 2005:
Despite a 61-58 loss to the Tampa Bay Storm, the Dragons clinched their third consecutive Eastern Division Championship.
May 21, 2005:
Chris Angel finished the season with 102.5 tackles, setting a new team record. The previous record was held by Kevin Kaesviharn with 94.5 set in 2000.
May 24, 2005:
Billy Parker caps off his rookie reason by being named to the
2005 All-Rookie team. The following day he is named to the 2005 All-Arena team at the DS position. A day after Parkerıs second honor, Marcus ³Snowball² Owen is selected to the 2005 All-Ironman team at his OL/DL position.
June 23, 2005:
After an outstanding season by setting the team record for touchbacks with 52, Rob Bironas signs with the Tennessee Titans of the NFL.
He went onto kick for Tennessee for the entire season and had as much success with the Titans as he did for the Dragons.
February 11, 2006:
Dragons QB Aaron Garcia and Utah QB Joe Germaine combine for a record 20 touchdowns at Utah's Delta Center. Each threw
ten touchdown passes.
February 19, 2006:
QB Aaron Garcia becomes the first quarterback in AFL history to compile 750 touchdowns when he throws a 6-yard
pass to Maurice Brown against the Philadelphia Soul.
March 18, 2006:
K Jesse Obert sets the Dragons record with 29 consecutive PAT's when he kicks a successful extra point against the
Tampa Bay Storm.
April 29, 2006:
WR/LB Mike Horacek becomes the sixth player in AFL history to record 200 career touchdown passes after receiving
a 17-yard pass from Nick Browder versus the Philadelphia Soul.
May 6, 2006:
Weylan Harding becomes the first coach in AFL history to record a combined 20 wins in his first two seasons as head
coach when the Dragons defeat the Georgia Force at the Nassau Coliseum.
May 12, 2006:
WR/DB Mutsumi Takahashi becomes the first Japanese person to play in an AFL game when he laces up for an away game
against the Dallas Desperados.
